Abstract

Gender-based violence can take various forms. In recent years, however, society has begun to recognise the impact of certain ways of relating—previously normalised or considered typical within relationships—that may in fact constitute psychological or emotional abuse. For this reason, this article seeks to explore the phenomenon of gaslighting, a form of abuse that frequently occurs within (toxic) intimate relationships and tends to affect women disproportionately. Given the short-and long-term consequences of this type of violence, the article emphasises the  importance of establishing support networks for victims, particularly within the judicial
system, to help them feel safe. It is essential that victims know their report has not been in vain but has instead led to the recognition and punishment of the psychological abuse they have suffered at the hands of their abuser.
